  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can you tell me if there is any diets available for patients with stage 4 renal failure hoping to not take dialysis?

A: Yes, it is really important to be gentle on your kidneys by keeping the protein in your diet low. Check out this site
http://www.dietsite.com/dt/diets/kidneydisease/kidneyintro.asp

Because there are so many stages of renal failure, it is difficult for me to tell you how much protein to eat (usually I have GFR, potassium and protein lab values, to determine an appropriate amount), just try to eat somewhere between 0.6-0.8 grams per Kg of body weight. Some doctors have been successful with as little as 0.3-0.5 grams of protein per Kg body weight.

So that would be your weight in pounds divided by 2.2 and then multiply by 0.6 Each ounce of protein (fish, chicken, beef egg) has about 7 grams of protein in it. Fruits and vegetables are OK if your potassium lab value is normal. So it is like a chess game: check current lab values and then make your move to try to normalize them. For example, if your potassium is high, cut down on high potassium foods and then check lab values again. Each person will be different. I hope I helped a little, good luck and let me know if I need to clarify anything.

Q: Apples that are pre-sliced and sold in a bag have Calcium Ascorbate. Is that okay?

A: The apples in the bag are fine if it is easier, but whole apples are better!

Q: I bought some Morningstar chicken nuggets. Is pretty much anything from Morningstar okay?

A: Anything from Morningstar has no cholesterol and has a pretty good ratio of total carbs to protein.

Q: Can I purchase the less expensive club soda, or should I only drink Perrier?

A: Perrier and Peligrino are more alkalizing than soda water. So, it is better for you to have alkaline-based foods.

Q: What do you think of pork?

A: Pork is a good protein option!

Q: I need a 'default fast food.' Something for when I am eating 'emotionally.' Sometimes I have a bad day. What is your one choice that I can make as an absolute last resort? Near me is a McDonald's, Subway, Duffy’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and CR Chicks.

A: CR Chicks, Duffy’s and Wendy’s seem to have more whole foods available, the less processed the better. If it has protein and vegetables it is even better!
